Where to Stay in Mumbai

In a city this long, where you sleep decides how much you see. Here is how to choose.

Mumbai stretches some 40 km from Colaba in the south to Borivali in the north, and a cross-town journey can take ninety minutes at the wrong hour. So choose the area first and the hotel second.

For a first visit of two or three days, stay in South Mumbai — Colaba, Fort or Marine Drive — where most of the sights are. If you are in town for food, nightlife and a younger scene, look at Bandra or the mid-town towers of Worli and Lower Parel. For business, BKC; for a beach sunset, Juhu; for a late arrival or an early flight, the airport hotels. Mumbai hotel prices are high by Indian standards, so book early for November to February.

Booking tips

  • Book early for peak dates: December to February, Diwali and the Christmas–New Year week fill up, and prices climb sharply.
  • Monsoon bargains: June to September brings the lowest rates of the year, often at the very best hotels.
  • Check the terminal: for an airport hotel, pick one near the terminal you are actually flying from — T1 and T2 are a road journey apart.
  • Sea view or city view: on Marine Drive the bay view is the reason to stay; confirm the room category before paying.
  • Budget stays: Colaba and Fort have the city’s main cluster of simple guesthouses and hostels. Rooms are small and good ones sell out — use the full hotel list and read recent reviews.
  • Split your stay: on a longer visit, two nights in the south and one or two in Bandra or Juhu gives you both cities.

Arriving late at night? A pre-booked car or one of the private airport transfers saves negotiating at the terminal. And see getting to and around Mumbai for how the areas connect.

About 25–30 km. Allow 45 minutes at night and 90 minutes or more in peak traffic; the underground Metro is an alternative with light luggage.
